Seoul city authorities have discovered high levels of toxic chemicals in children’s products sold by the popular online shopping platform Shein. During their weekly inspections of items sold by various e-commerce sites, including Shein, Temu, and AliExpress, Seoul officials found that several Shein products contained phthalates, chemicals used to soften plastics, in amounts hundreds of times above acceptable levels. One pair of children’s shoes had 428 times the permitted levels of phthalates, while three bags contained amounts up to 153 times the limit. Phthalates have been known to cause hormone disruptions and have been linked to various health issues. Seoul authorities have requested the removal of these products from sale, and Shein has stated that it takes product safety seriously, requiring suppliers to comply with its controls and standards. The European Union recently added Shein to its list of digital firms subject to stricter safety rules, particularly those protecting minors from unsafe products.
