Safe Superintelligence Inc., an AI research lab co-founded by former OpenAI chief scientist Ilya Sutskever, has secured $1 billion in funding to create a safe and advanced AI system. The funding round was supported by Andreessen Horowitz, Sequoia Capital, and SV Angel, as well as venture capital firm NFDG, co-founded by Nat Friedman and Daniel Gross.
Sutskever, a renowned AI researcher, introduced Safe Superintelligence in June 2024, shortly after leaving OpenAI. The lab aims to focus on research and will not develop or sell AI products in the near term. This differentiates Safe Superintelligence from companies like OpenAI, which are more commercially oriented.
“This company is unique because its first and only focus will be on building safe superintelligence,” Sutskever said.
