In a landmark decision, Riyadh has emerged victorious in the bid to host the World Expo 2030, prevailing over challenges posed by South Korea and Italy for the esteemed event. The Saudi capital secured a decisive majority, receiving 119 out of 165 votes from member states of the Paris-based Bureau International des Expositions, as confirmed through an electronic voting process. This success positions Riyadh as the successor host to Osaka in 2025, marking a significant moment for Saudi Arabia and aligning with the overarching goals of Vision 2030. During the final stages of the selection process at the BIE event in Paris, candidates presented comprehensive progress reports, seeking to underscore their capabilities and aspirations. The Expo, anticipated as the pinnacle of Vision 2030, will serve as a global platform to showcase the Kingdom’s remarkable achievements, with a specific emphasis on hospitality, tourism, and culture.

Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman actively championed the bid during a visit to Paris in June, leveraging an exhibition by the Royal Commission for the City of Riyadh to showcase Saudi Arabia’s rich heritage and cultural depth. The bid gained momentum with support from influential figures, including French senator Natalie Goulet, who deemed hosting the Expo in Riyadh as “the culmination of Vision 2030.” Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan expressed gratitude for the backing received from 130 countries, emphasizing the Kingdom’s unwavering commitment to global collaboration. Additionally, he announced a substantial commitment, providing facilities packages totaling $348 million to a pool of 100 eligible countries. Riyadh’s successful bid signifies a momentous step in the Kingdom’s journey toward international recognition and collaboration on a grand scale.
