OpenAI has introduced Instant Checkout, a new feature that allows ChatGPT users to make purchases directly within the app. The tool currently supports single-item orders from U.S.-based Etsy sellers, with plans to expand to more than one million Shopify merchants, including brands such as Skims and Glossier.
The announcement boosted Etsy shares nearly 14% on Monday, while Shopify gained more than 5%. Instant Checkout is available to U.S. ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Free users, with global expansion planned.
The feature could create a new revenue stream for OpenAI, which collects transaction fees through agreements with Etsy and Shopify. Users pay no extra fees, and product prices remain the same.
Michelle Fradin, OpenAI’s product lead for ChatGPT commerce, said the goal is to make ChatGPT a tool for completing real-world tasks. Future updates will include multi-item carts and international support.
Shares of Etsy and Shopify rose as investors welcomed the move as a major step in AI-driven commerce.
