OpenAI is reportedly in preliminary discussions to secure a new funding round, targeting a valuation equal to or exceeding $100 billion, according to sources cited by Bloomberg News. While the terms and timing of this potential funding are yet to be finalized and may still undergo changes, OpenAI is also in talks with Abu Dhabi-based G42 regarding funding for a new chip venture. The report suggests that OpenAI is considering raising between $8 billion and $10 billion from G42 for the chip venture, though it remains unclear if this is connected to the broader funding round. The company is currently concluding a separate tender offer led by Thrive Capital, set to be completed in early January, allowing employees to sell shares at a valuation of $86 billion. Microsoft, a committed investor in OpenAI, has pledged over $10 billion to support the company, which gained prominence with the release of ChatGPT in November 2022. OpenAI’s recent strategic moves include a $300 million share sale at a $30 billion valuation and the reinstatement of CEO Sam Altman after a brief ousting in November 2022.
