Battery manufacturer Northvolt announced on Tuesday that it will consolidate and shift the development of its lithium-metal battery technology from California to its R&D hub in Västerås, Sweden. This decision is part of a broader strategic review aimed at refocusing the company’s expansion plans following a series of setbacks, including production delays and the cancellation of a €2 billion order by a customer.
In a statement, Northvolt explained that the transfer is a strategic move to centralize the R&D and industrialization of its cell product portfolio into a single location. The consolidation will help streamline operations and focus resources on advancing battery technology more efficiently.
Northvolt acquired the California-based battery technology company Cuberg in 2021, which has since grown from a 25-person operation to over 200 employees, primarily focused on developing lithium-metal battery technology. As part of the transition, Northvolt has encouraged employees at the California unit to apply for positions within other divisions of the company.
