Media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, announced on Saturday that it is closing its operations in Brazil due to “censorship orders” from Brazilian judge Alexandre de Moraes. The platform claimed that Moraes secretly threatened one of its legal representatives, Rachel Nova Conceicao, with arrest and daily fines if the platform didn’t comply with orders to remove certain content.
In response, X decided to protect its staff by shutting down its operations in Brazil, although the service will still be available to Brazilian users. The Brazilian Supreme Court declined to comment on the matter or confirm the authenticity of the document shared by X.
This conflict stems from Moraes’ earlier orders to block accounts accused of spreading misinformation during former President Jair Bolsonaro’s government. Musk has criticized these orders as unconstitutional.
