Shobhit Maini, Citigroup’s global head of digital assets for its markets unit, is leaving the bank after over 14 years to pursue an entrepreneurial opportunity in the digital asset space. Maini, who joined Citigroup in 2010, held his most recent role since 2021. His departure was announced in an internal memo by Lee Smallwood, Citigroup’s head of markets innovation and investments.
Deepak Mehra, currently the international lead for Citi markets’ strategic investments, will now oversee digital assets for the markets unit in an expanded role. Citigroup declined to comment on Maini’s departure.
Maini’s exit comes as Citigroup continues to advance its digital money and tokenization projects, including its participation as the first digital custodian in the BondbloX Bond Exchange, a fractional bond trading platform launched in 2020.
